The Holiday

Only time will tell if Writer-Director Nancy Meyers new film “The Holiday,” will become a holiday classic, but it is a classic film just the same.

Meyers last four films have all been sleeper hits, starting with “The Parent Trap,” “What Woman Want,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” and now probably her finest film to date, “The Holiday,” she has proven that good filmmaking begins with writing and creating characters who are people you want to meet.

So let me introduce you to Iris and Amanda, two women who are literally worlds apart, but share the same dilemma - they both have the wrong men in their lives. Iris works for a large newspaper in London, and is madly in love with Jasper – who has been leading her on for the last three years – with false promises and as Iris puts it “Unrequited Love.” And now at the newspapers annual Christmas party we find out that Jasper has become engaged, and you guessed it, not to Iris.

And across the pond is the high-powered Los Angeles advertising magnate Amanda Woods, who has just found her boyfriend, has been cheating on her with a younger co-worker. Unfortunately Amanda cannot seem to shed a tear about the breakup, which leads her to search for a vacation devoid of men. And so Iris and Amanda meet online and decide to swap houses for the Christmas holiday.

Now the two women find themselves in completely different environments, each with a new lease on life. Cameron Diaz is charming as Amanda, who now in London, meets up with Iris’s brother, Graham (played by Jude Law) who may or may not be the perfect man for her. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles Iris (played wonderfully by Kate Winslet) befriends Amanda’s next-door neighbor Arthur, a screenwriter from the Golden Age of Hollywood, who encourages her to stand out as a “Leading Lady.” Which leads her into the embrace of composer Miles (played by Jack Black).

Now this may all sound a little complicated, and that’s where great writing and directing really come into play, because Nancy Meyer’s pulls it off beautifully. And there is a lot of fun little surprises in store for each of these women, who must now decide if the time is right to take a leap of faith?

Enough can’t be said for the performances in this film, because they’re all actors who could easily blow each other of the stage and all manage to do so well together that it is at times breathtaking to watch. I seriously doubt that anyone had a bad time making this movie. As I said earlier, it’s hard to tell what holiday films will become classics. You know, the kind that are shown on TV every year, over and over again.

This one certainly has all the ingredients for that kind of success. Mainly because of it’s young and very talented cast. But also, because it does have a message that life is the adventure you make. And that anything worth having mandates that you take a chance. It is a perfect Holiday treat, and a great date movie. So grab the one you love, or the one you want to love and take them to see “The Holiday.” I promise you won’t be disappointed.
